Pastor James L. Smith has been married 45 years to Hazelene T. Smith. He has 3 adult children, Shon, Omar, and Ebony. He is a loving grandfather to 11 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He has served as the Senior Pastor of Palmer Grove Baptist Church located in Kingstown, North Carolina for over 41 years.
Known as a pillar in the church and community he has served as past Moderator of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Association as well as a member of the General Board of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. He served as Vice Chairman of the Evangelism Committee of the GBSCNC. He is a member of the National Baptist Convention, U.S. A., Inc.
His education includes; Graduate of Shelby High School, Graduate of Fruitland Baptist Bible College located in Hendersonville, NC. where he earned an Associate of Religion Degree. He is a Graduate of Mid-Atlantic Bible College in Rock Hill S.C. also. Pastor Smith obtained his Bachelors of Religion from Mid Atlantic Bible College in Rock Hill, SC. He earned his Master of Divinity Degree from Gardner Webb University Christopher M. White School of Divinity. Pastor Smith has also done Study Tours in Israel, Egypt and Greece.
His community service includes; Life Membership of the NAACP of Cleveland County. He has served at Gardner Webb University as Board Member of Christian Service Organization; Advisory Board Member of Cops and Clergy of Cleveland County NC; Former board member of Cleveland County YMCA; Former board member of Hospice of Cleveland County.
